Stingers are 2009 TBA Finalists - August 23

After a tough opening game loss in the double knockout TBA Championships, the Stingers battled their way back to the finals but lost. Congratulations to the North York Blues. Click HERE for tournament details.

The Stingers reached the finals needing to beat the undefeated Blues twice. Games with North York this year have been battles and this would be no different. Luc started the game which quickly became a classic pitchers battle going into the sixth down 1 - 0. With the bases loaded and a pitching change, the Blues scored 6 runs to put the game away. The Stingers only were able to muster 2 hits in the game but battled hard all weekend. Congratulations to everyone.

The Stingers entered Sunday with the prospect of playing Etobicoke who have had the teams number so far this year. The Rangers opened the 1st with 2 runs but in the 3rd, the Stingers came back with 4 of their own to take the lead for good in this tight 5 - 3 win. Sean started the game and went a strong 5 innings with Colin finishing up the final 2 innings. It was a low hitting game but 9 walks (3 by Sean) was key to the offence. The Stingers had now fought their way back into the finals.

Saturday evening brought on West Toronto. The 1st inning set the tone as the Stingers scored 5 runs and followed that up with 2 in the 2nd to jump out in front and roll to a 9 - 4 win. Steven was strong on the mound and came within 1 out of a complete game before running out of pitches on his pitch count. Leading the offence was Trevor with 3 hits, and Connor and Abdullah with 2 each. The Stingers were still alive and now it is off to Sunday.

Saturday morning saw a match-up with North Toronto. With this being a double knockout tournament, one more loss meant elimination. 4 runs in the second and a 5 - 0 lead helped to ease the situation as the team coasted to a 10 - 3 win. David got the call and pitched an excellent 5 innings before giving way to Patrick who finished it up. Sean led the way at the plate with 2 hits and 2 walks while Adrian was banging it all around the park with 2 doubles. The tournament continues.......

The Stingers drew the regular season 1st place North York Blues in game one of the TBA Championships. The Blues opened with 2 runs in the 1st and the Stingers got 2 back in the 2nd to tie it up and the battle was on. Trevor got the start and went a strong 6 innings before leaving with the game tied 3 - 3 after 6. But in the 7th, North York pushed across an unearned run and got the walk off win and a tough loss for the Stingers who left 11 runners on base while giving up 1 earned run. A game of opportunities missed. David had 3 walks and a single at the plate in the losing cause. Now the stingers were behind the eight ball for the weekend.

Stingers Ready for TBA's in Fine Style - August 19

With the TBA Championships starting on Friday, the Stingers used a combination of 5 pitchers against the North Toronto A's and coasted to an 8 - 1 win. Akeel started off the pitching parade with 2 shutout innings. Sean had a triple, double and single and never did get a 4th at bat to try for a home run to complete the cycle.

Stingers Play a Sunday Doubleheader with West Toronto - August 16

With their second twinbill in 5 days, an early 4 - 0 lead could not be held as the Wildcats came right back at the Stingers with 5 of their own in the 2nd and another 3 in the 3rd to take the game 8 - 5. Sean went 3 for 3 at the plate in the losing cause.

Game 2 had the Stingers once again jump to an early lead only to see the Wildcats fight back to take the lead in the top of the 4th. However this time the Stingers fought back with single runs in the 4th and 5th to emerge with a one run victory. Trevor got the win going 5 innings and his pitch limit and David chipped in with 2 RBI's in the victory.

A 3 run 1st and another 5 runs in the 3rd inning allowed the Stingers to cruise to a 8 - 3 win in the opening game with Newmarket. Sean pitched a solid 4 innings for the win and Colin finished off the 5th inning. Steven had 2 singles and a walk to pace the offence.

Stingers Turn a Close Game into a Rout With a 16 hit Attack - August 6

The Stingers have had some tight battles with North York this year and this would really not be much different. What was a one run game going into the 7th turned into a 14 - 5 win  9 runs being scored in the last inning. Even with 16 hits in the game, it took 5 key walks to fuel the run explosion in the 7th. Trevor pitched a strong 6 innings giving up 1 earned run. Josh and Trevor each had 3 hits, Sean and Abdullah 2 hits to pace the offence. The game also featured a 300+ foot home run to right centre by Connor.

Pittsburgh Area Teams Not Nice to the Stingers – July 5

Sunday was the start of the playoffs and the Stingers having finished 3rd in their box would face off with the five other 3rd place finishers. Lose and it is time to go home. The Pittsburgh Tigers, another one of those Pittsburgh area teams was going to be our opponent. This was one of those older teams that would make us have to focus on every play and they love to hit the ball. While we did battle early, the 3rd inning was our undoing. Four errors in an inning is never good and 10 runs later just pounded that into us. Hopefully it will be a lesson learned. A mercy made it a short game.

In the final team meeting after the game, the boys were told that although this was not the way you want to end the tournament, they should hold their heads high as they battled some tough teams and started to show a more aggressive approach to hitting.

It was now time for a scheduled week off to relax before the second half of the season. Adrian was taking advantage of this to take in some instructional lessons and catch the Blue Jays game in Baltimore.

Stingers Set Off Their Own Fireworks – July 4

The Stingers did not quite get the results we wanted in game one of the day, but this game would not disappoint. Meeting up with the New Hampshire Storm, a team that had traveled 12 hours to get to the tournament, we brewed up our own storm. Adrian and Patrick combined to hold the Storm to one run and we blew them away with 6 in the 2nd and 8 in the 3rd on our way to 19 runs and 16 hits. Luc, Aaron and Trevor contributed 3 hits each with Aaron bouncing one over the fence 330 ft away for a double. Now it is off to the playoffs with all the other 3rd place teams.

Coach Frank was not aware that an agreement was made with the players that if we scored 10 runs, they could dump Gatorade on him. Well check out the You Tube video…

Stingers Don’t Quit But It’s Not Enough – July 4

Saturday was Independence Day in the U.S. and the Stingers wanted to make a statement. Next team in line was the Chartier Valley Colts who are from just outside of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately we did not get the start we wanted. The colts were able to get out to an 8 – 2 lead after 5 but the Stingers came back to score 5 in the top of the 6th and make it a one run game. The Colts answered right back with 5 of their own in the bottom of the inning and that basically was the game. Connor came to West Virginia having been out for 3 weeks with a bad ankle sprain. After some light DH duties early in the tournament, Connor was given the green light to play defense and he promptly had 3 hits including a double. It’s great to see our walking wounded coming back.

The Weekend Wasn’t Just About Ball – July 3

A great schedule had only a Friday morning game with our next one not scheduled until Saturday at 1 p.m. It was time for some leisure activity. Patrick and Aaron were off to the local jail to catch a hanging or electrocution. Actually the tour pointed out that it had not occurred since the early 60’s.

The outdoor pool was certainly a big hit as there always seemed that something was going on in the water.

Mucker’s competitions were always ongoing. The boys tried hard to come up with winning team combinations but coaches Frank, Mark, Bob and Dave ruled the roost.

And what else do the boys do when they have time away from the game……play stickball !  With almost 6 acres of open land in our hotel backyard, the broomstick and sponge golf balls were put to good use.

Dinner time had everyone head over to USA Steak Buffet for the all you can eat deal. When they saw us, we were escorted to our own room ! Best to protect the patrons with the likes of Sean eyeing the buffet. The parents didn’t do too bad themselves.

Stingers Meet Their Match With The Americans – July 3

On Friday morning the Stingers met up with the Chambersburgh Americans of Pennsylvania. Trevor started the game and although it was close early, a couple of errors and a big 2 run homerun led to a 4 run 3rd and the game quickly slipped away from there ending in a mercy and a 13 – 3 loss after 5 innings. As coach Frank would remark, sometimes you will meet older teams when you go to the U.S. but the key is to play error free ball. While the offence was not much, Patrick did contribute 2 hits. Akeel also made a bang with a straight steal of home off their lefthander.

Stingers vs Hornets Lead To A Texas Shootout in West Virginia – July 2

Game 2 in the afternoon had us playing the Bethel Church Hornets from the Pittsburgh area. Aaron, a call-up to the team, started the game and pitched a strong 5 innings giving up only 5 hits with 8 strikeouts and left the game with the lead. Bethel Church would not quit and fought back with 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh. With the winning run on 2nd, Trevor came on and induced a groundout to 2nd and set up extra innings and a Texas Shootout. This local rule has the last out going to 2nd base and everyone comes to the plate with a 3 – 2 count. Everything else is regular ball – 3 outs ends the inning. A single and a walk started the top of the inning for the Stingers setting up a big 2 run double by Josh leading the way to a 6 run inning. With the pressure on, 3 pitches and 3 outs by Trevor in the bottom of the inning closed out the game and we had our 2nd tournament win.

Stingers Kickoff the Beast of the East Tournament with a big win – July 2

This tournament has 36 teams (6 boxes of 6 teams). So there were a lot of games to be played. Game one of the tournament saw the Stingers face off with the local Moundsville All Star team. What was a close game turned into a blowout with a big 7 run outburst in the fifth inning. Luc started the game and went a strong 6 innings giving up only 5 hits. The offence was carried by Trevor with 5 RBI’s and Colin with 4. David chipped in with 4 hits and Akeel with 3. This was a nice way to start a tournament.

Stingers Take Part In Wild Things Opening Ceremonies – July 1

Before starting the Beast of the East tournament in Wheeling, West Virginia, the team had an opportunity to take in a game of the Washington Wild Things who play in the Independent Frontier League. Since it was Canada Day, we were invited to take part in the opening ceremonies with Trevor and Colin carrying the Canadian flag. Patrick was chosen to throw out the first pitch and under tremendous pressure from his teammates, threw a perfect strike….phew !  A great time was had by all. A special thank you to Young Lee for arranging our participation in the ceremonies. Check out his videos on You Tube.

Stingers No Match For Mariners - June 20

We scored, we scored, just not enough times as our first look at the new and improved Markham Mariners results in a 7-2 loss. However only 4 of those runs were earned. Both pitchers, Steven who started and Abdullah who took over in the fourth only allowed 1 hit each. But an all around lack of team focus let the game slip away. Too many walks, hit batters, errors, baserunners getting picked and/or doubled off, throws not being made, bad throws being made, and a lack of hitting. With only 7 hits in three games, it looks like the boys are in bad need of some batting practice.

We did all the things you need to win a baseball game, oh ya, except hit the ball. Trevor pitched great, going 6 innings for the complete game. Giving up only 2 runs on 6 hits. Steven and Colin both made highlight reel catches. But, 2 Tigers pitchers combined for the no-hitter, the second of the season we have allowed. Donations are being accepted to see if we can buy a run after being shut-out for the second game in a row.

With only 3 hits, all infield singles, The Stingers were unable to cash any of the 8 runners left stranded on base losing 4-0 to Team New Era. Luc started and pitched well, allowing 2 runs ( 1 earned ), on 2 hits, and striking out 3 in 3 1/3 innings. Akeel came on in relief with 2 runs on 4 hits. Thanks to David who came into the game, barely able to walk due to a nagging heel injury. Preventing us from having to forfeit. With our only sub already inserted into the line-up, Sean was ejected for some unfavorable comments to the umpire after a third strike call that was about a foot outside.

Stingers Face North Toronto For The First Time - June 14

In our first game against the new kids on the block, the North Toronto A's, the Stingers let one inning turn what should have been a blow out into a closer game then it should have been. After 3 complete we had an 8-1 lead, on only 2 hits to their 1. But in the fourth, 4 hits, combined with 3 errors suddenly found the score 9-5 with nobody out and the bases loaded. Colin took over pitching from Adrian (who got the win) and shut them down. Trevor finished them off in the fifth after we added a couple in our half of the inning, for an 11-6 final. Considering they got more hits then us, and made fewer errors, you might say we were lucky to get the win.

Injury Depleted Stingers No Match For Rangers - June 10

Due to injuries and a school trip, the Stingers were only able to put 8 men in the field. Not a situation you want against Etobicoke. Sean got the start and Steven came in for relief. Both pitched fairly well but there were at least 4 hits that, had there been a centrefielder, would have been outs. Or at the very most singles, but ended up rolling for doubles and triples. We might have made a game of it if our bats had been a little hotter. But, we managed only 3 hits leaving 8 men on base. The final was 10-2 for the Rangers.

North York Leaves Stingers Singing The Blues - June 7

In a game that saw few hits and even fewer runs the Stingers were defeated by NY 2-1 in the Oakville semi-final. Our only run was scored by Connor on a badly sprained ankle after sliding into third. The throw was wild and Connor showed real guts in hobbling home in obvious pain. It was a close, hard fought game. But, as they say in baseball; sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains. A couple of timely hits and it would have gone the other way as we left 10 runners stranded.

Hats off to Luc who pitched great for the complete game win. He allowed only 2 runs, giving up 4 hits, and 4 BB. Waterloo's starter pitched well also, as the score was 3-2 after 5 complete. But their new hurler didn't have much luck as the Stingers strung him for 8 runs, on 8 hits in the last 2 innings for an 11-2 victory. With the lopsided victory, and a little luck the Stingers earned the wildcard spot and will face off against North York in the semi-finals.

Errors Cost Stingers, Rangers Take Close One - June 6

The Stingers lost an important game against Etobicoke 5-4. The Stingers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. We held the lead until the sixth when the Rangers struck for four runs to move ahead 5-3. We made a valiant try getting 1 in the top of the seventh, but that was as close as we could get. None of Etobicoke's 5 runs were earned. With 9 errors in the last two games we need to get our fielding in order. If we can, now that the bats have gotten better we could go far in this tournament.

In a see-saw battle that had the lead change hands four times. The Stingers were able to pull out the win. Steven scored once in the third off a walk and in the bottom of the fourth with the score 7-6 for the Hawks, drilled a single up the middle with two out, knocking in the tying and winning runs. Eight was the lucky number of the day as the Stingers had 8 runs, on 8 hits, with 8 left on base. Conner got the win and Trevor the save, his second of the season in two opportunities. The final was 8-7, the Hawks have improved since last year. Let's hope we can continue on Friday and maybe make it a little more one sided in our favour.

Stingers Drop Fourth In A Row - May 31

Add a new coach, a dash of a couple of former Stingers and what do you get? An East York Bulldog team that beat us 4-3 after beating NY in a walk off victory for a double header sweep. Watch out Stingers fans, the Bulldogs are no longer a team to be taken for granted. But we helped them along quite nicely by getting only four hits and stranding eight base runners. Only two of our three runs were earned. With the scored tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, former Stinger Adam scored the go ahead and winning run. This reporter still questions East York's illegal re-entry of the pitcher, who was a sub, then was pinch run for, and then re-inserted into the game to pitch the final inning. According to the OBA rules that is an illegal substitution and should not have been allowed.  Why was it?

Dead Bats Lead To Tie In Must Win Game Against Braves - May23

To have any hope of making the quarter finals we had to beat Brampton. But the Stingers were limited to just one hit through seven innings. Not that the Braves did much better as the game ended in a 1-1 tie, neither run for either team was earned. A testament to strong pitching by Colin and David who each allowed only two hits. The Golden Ice Pack does to Patrick for an awesome game behind the plate. Throwing out three runners attempting to steal and blocking everything that came his way. Including one in the bottom of the sixth (with the go ahead run on third) that kind of got away from David. Patrick blocked it from rolling to the ridiculously long back stops in Vaughan and prevented the run from scoring.

Stingers Show Wexford What It Takes To Play AAA - May 20

Due to a cancellation of our regular season game against West Toronto, Coach Frank arranged an exhibition game against our AA affiliate the Wexford Twins. We scored in every inning, and all  but two of our players crossed the plate at one time or another. The result was a 14-4 win, the Stingers played five error free innings. Our third error free game in our last four, good jobs guys. As with our other couple of starts versus AA teams, pitching really seems to be the difference between the two levels. The Stingers were given thirteen free passes and seven of our runs were scored by batters that walked.  Let's hope the boys can keep up the great work this weekend at the Vaughan Tournament. We're in pretty tough against Richmond Hill, Windsor and Brampton.

Stingers No Match For Reigning Provincial Champs - May 17

In a game that we played but were never really in, Whitby eliminated the Stingers from the tournament in the semi-final. We managed only two hits, scoring one run and that was unearned. The final was 9-1, we had the chances to make it interested as we stranded seven baserunners. But the bats were as cold as the weather. Hey, at least it wasn't raining.

Close Shave Against Vaughan, But Stingers Hold On - May 17

In our first game against the Vikings this season, the Stingers were able to score runs in every inning. After three complete we had a 5-1 lead. In the top of the fourth Vaughan scored six run and we still didn't have an out. Colin came in to pitch with the bases loaded, and stopped the bleeding. The Stingers scored three in the bottom half to take the lead. Colin had an RBI and scored the go ahead run. In the top of five, the Vikings got the tying run as far as third, but with the help of some strong D, Colin shut them down to gain his first win of the season and take the game MVP. Josh also had a great game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. With the win we face Whitby in the semi-finals.

Stingers Rout Royal York After Rain Delay - May 16

After a two hour rain delay the Stingers cruised to an easy victory over the Royal York Cardinals 15-1. Luc got the start and the win allowing just one run on one hit in three innings. Colin closed it out, pitching two perfect innings. Errors seemed to be Royal York's undoing, as only seven of our 15 runs were earned.

Stingers Win Walk Fest To Open Competitive Edge Tournament - May 15

In a game that saw 23 walks in total for both teams and one hit batter, the Stingers beat the Clarington Orioles 11-3. Although their defense and hitting seemed to be not too bad, their pitching was not at the level we are used to facing. Akeel was named player of the game for his three well pitched scoreless innings. Allowing only two hits and striking out three. Adrian got the win. For both it was their first appearances on the mound this season. Pat had a great game, both for his defence behind the plate and his bat, going 2 for 2, with a walk and two RBI's.

Better Late Than Never In Home Opener - May13

After a 40 min. delay due to an umpire shortage our game against the NY Blues finally got underway. The Blues cashed one in the top of the second, quickly countered by four runs in the Stingers half of the inning.  After four we had a 7-3 lead, however a three run fifth pulled NY to within one. The Stingers grabbed another in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-6. NY tied it in the sixth 8-8 and were able to fend off a last ditch effort by the Stingers who were able to get runners on second and third with two out. A ground ball held the time limit shorten game at an 8-8 tie. Three unearned runs and nine runners left on base allowed the always tough Blues to stay in the game and scrape out the tie.

Wildcats Wouldn't Quit, But Stingers Hold On - May 12

On a game day that finally had some decent weather the Stingers faced the West Toronto Wildcats at High Park. The Wildcats scratched out one run in the second and another in the third. We left the bases loaded in the second and finally scored three in the fourth inning. Then added two more in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. But the Cats weren't done, a solo home by their number four hitting and a run scored after an error made it 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh with Trevor in for the save, he struck out the first two batters. Then another error allowed a runner to reach base. A pass ball and a stolen base saw the tying run on third. Trevor K'd the final batter to strike out the side and seal the win. Steven got the win and David pitched well in middle relief. Congrats to Abdullah on his first AAA hit, a beauty of a shot over the centrefielder's head for a double that knocked in two runs.

Hot Bats On A Cold Morning - May 10

After the opening tournament was rained out completely, Coach Frank set up an exhibition game against the NY Blues. The boys connected for 9 hits, taking the game 7-3. It could have been even more lopsided as we stranded eleven baserunners. Luc pitched three strong scoreless innings allowing only one hit and striking out three for the win. Stingers rookie Connor pitched two good innings also allowing only one hit. He went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and three runs scored. Let's hope the great result carries over to Wednesday when we face the Blues again for real in our home opener at Neilson.

Hail To The Stingers - May 9
Game one of the TBA opening tournament was called off as a thunderstorm blew in bringing driving rain and hail the size of marbles.

Stingers Season Opens On Rain Soaked Sunday - May 2

With a small lake in centre field and the warning track looking more like a moat, the Stingers kicked off the '09 campaign. In a rematch of last years TBA final we faced the Etobicoke Rangers (formerly Titans). The baseball gods smiled on the Rangers as it only seemed to rain when the Stingers came up to bat. We jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second which was washed away in the bottom of the frame as the Rangers struck for 3 runs. They added 3 more in the fourth. After a fifteen minute rain delay we took our last at bats but couldn't make any ground and the game was called after four and a half complete innings.
